Auroral activity in October 2014

Sponsor: PhD Cristiano Wrasse

On October 14th, 2014, the Kp index reached level 5, and the auroral AE index ranged 500-1000 nT during, 21:00 to 23:00 UT, considering the disturbed geomagnetic activity, with scale G1. See the details of the variation of Auroral index in Figure 1.

On the night of October 14th , between 21:00 and 22:00 UT, the all-sky camera from the Japanese Antarctic Station “Syowa” recorded auroral activity as shown in Figure 2. The green band structure, seen in the image, moved over the whole sky, while the particles from the solar wind precipitate in the Earth’s atmosphere at high latitudes. The origin of the green color is from the emission of atomic oxygen, which comes from 120-200 km height.
